The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography
From the best-selling author of Fermat’s Last Theorem, The Code Book is a history of man’s urge to uncover the secrets of codes, from Egyptian puzzles to modern day computer encryptions.
As in Fermat’s Last Theorem, Simon Singh brings life to an anstonishing story of puzzles, codes, languages and riddles that reveals man’s continual pursuit to disguise and uncover, and to work out the secret languages of others.
Codes have influenced events throughout history, both in the stories of those who make them and those who break them. The betrayal of Mary Queen of Scots and the cracking of the enigma code that helped the Allies in World War II are major episodes in a continuing history of cryptography. In addition to stories of intrigue and warfare, Simon Singh also investigates other codes, the unravelling of genes and the rediscovery of ancient languages and most tantalisingly, the Beale ciphers, an unbroken code that could hold the key to a $20 million treasure.

Title: One of the best books if you are interested in cryptography
Review: I really enjoyed reading this book. I learnt a lot about the history of cryptography and the different ciphers used throughout history. Simon Singh writes really well and explains complicated concepts so that even a layperson can also understand. The stories of ciphers used are very interesting. I had read his other book Fermats Last Theorem which I enjoyed as well. The only negative about this book is that itâs now 20 years old and further advances in cryptography must have taken place during the time.

Title: A very good read
Review: Very interesting and informative. I really like the cipher challenge at the end. The language is not too hard to understand and the length of the book is just right. It is to be noted that quantum computers are slightly exaggerated in terms of their prowess in this book. While there are quite a few algorithms that run faster on quantum computers, it isn’t the case for all algorithms.

Title: Good book for a first time introduction to cryptography/ciphers
Review: A good book to generate interest in cryptography. This is not for advanced readers and they might get put off by the few gotchas in the book. For them this is betterÂ

Review: Tous les livres de l’auteur sont très bon. Celui-ci ne fait pas exception à la règle et présente bien l’histoire du chiffrement et les différentes méthodes qui existent et ont existé.Par contre il date de quelques années et mériterai une update.
