Review: Too tall a claim for this book? I don’t think so: Paco Underhill is one of the most perceptive and insightful people in the worlds of retail, marketing, customer experience and business, as anyone who has read “Why We Buy” or any of his other books will know. In this book his attention turns to the most fundamental commodity/product/service/experience we buy, and his analysis of the extraordinary changes in how food is produced, distributed, sold, and consumed is hugely thought-provoking. Paco’s gift is to write a “business” book with all the pace and humanity of a rollicking thriller, and as such this book should be read by anyone who buys and/or eats food! There are some profoundly worrying statistics – such as that there are only 50 years’ worth of harvests in the UK – and also some fascinating insights into a more sustainable future, attracting entrepreneurs in the middle of cities into food production. Above all, the book is fuel (food for thought, one might say) for anyone who is interested in the future of our planet, in food and the people who produce it, and in ways in which food might help to ensure that humans remain social beings, connecting through life-enhancing experiences. That’s what I got out of this book – I’m sure you will take something different but no less valuable – and I’m sure you will enjoy the read!

Review: Paco’s “Why we buy” is one of those rare books that makes you look at something you do nearly every day in a totally different way. It sticks with you and you see its lessons in your day-to-day dealings with the world of retail. “How we Eat” aims to follow in that tradition. It’s a breezy read full of personal detail and conversation. Insightful, as always.
