Review: This book has an interesting premise — the investigation of suspected arson fires — but unfortunately the characters are not fully fleshed out . We are told repeatedly about Bree’s traumatic story, how she lost her family to a fire from which only she escaped, and we are told how well she and her investigation partner, Mike, work together, but we don’t have any idea about them as people beyond their dedication to their work. Also, the author uses too many similes and metaphors. Some of them are quite apt and creative but, as with starlings or sumac plants, when there are so many of them, it’s difficult to appreciate the quality of an individual one. I could not get engaged in this book, therefore, developing no feelings for the characters and being tripped up by overly elaborate phraseology on every page.

Review: This book was good, but not really good. It wasn’t bad either if am honest. I just didn’t enjoy it a whole lot. It just wasn’t my kind of book really. That’s not the authors fault. My personal preference 🤷‍♀️.

Review: I ended up skimming 3/4 of the book because I found the overly dramatic and overused metaphors annoying. It also drives me a little crazy when writers don’t know that when a character is shuffling through papers, she is “riffling”, not “rifling”. Or when you are focusing in on something, you are ” homing in” not “honing in”. I can overlook those kinds of things in a well-written story, which is not what this book is.
