Review: THE YOGA SUTRAS OF PATANJALI “The Book of the Spiritual Man”An Interpretation By Charles Johnston Bengal Civil Service, Retired; Indian Civil Service, Sanskrit Prizeman; Dublin University, Sanskrit PrizemanThis little book is a gem, not only for the few but powerful words of Patanjali, but also because of the splendid “interpretation” by Charles Johnston, a facet I almost missed. I initially misunderstood Mr. Johnston’s role, thinking he was “only” a translator. But look at his credentials! A Sanskrit scholar who lived and worked in the India of the Raj. You can’t find a more accomplished expert than him. Speaking of Karma, the consequences of missing Johnston’s contributions were (drum roll, please)… deeper insights and revelations. I read 15% of the book before my revelation, so I flipped back and re-read it from the beginning. As an aside, you can tell that I have the Kindle version: instead of page numbers, I have “percentages;” and “flipping back” refers to Amazon’s new Page Turn Animation. Now back to this classic. As with Charles Johnston, I am a Christian with an interest in, and appreciation for, the spiritual journeys of other cultures. No judgements here, just an excellent and readable translation, explanation, and gratitude for discovering works of the Masters. The interpreter displays another virtuous trait: While he often alludes to our Holy Bible, he doesn’t force Christianity on his readers. Rather, he uses appropriate allusions so that we can relate and recognize commonalities. Deftly done, I do say.

Review: I’m grateful for this free ebook. I was able to understand most of the sutras and the commentary. Minor negatives are: (1) the English is outdated, (2) translation and commentary were surprisingly “Christian” in many portions, and (3) minor typos. Overall, I recommend as a good starting point and then, if you want to study further, finding a more modern and religiously-neutral (or Indian) translation with commentary

Review: A nearly two thousand year old seminal book of Indian practical philosophy, it contains timeless wisdom that speaks to the heart of truth-seekers of every age and clime. Make no mistake, the knowledge expounded here, if cultivated with inner love and attention, can help the seeker rise to undreamed of heights and transcend the illusory landscape that presently contains us. Though one hundred years old (published in 1912) today, this poignant English rendition and insightful commentary are just as relevant today as they will be to readers of the English language a thousand years hence.I almost gave the book 4 stars thinking of all the typographical errors that could have been attended to by those who scanned and rendered the book to Kindle format. But I’d be sadden to despair if by doing so anyone would be turned away from reading this penetrating interpretation by Charles Johnston, a British Sanskrit scholar in the civil service during Mohandas Gandhi’s India. In a later addition to this review, I will endeavor to point out the most egregious typographical errors found in the book, that all may be better served by its purposeful existence. I found an old hardcover edition that I believe will shed light on some the puzzling errors contained in the Kindle edition.
