A completely practical workbook that offers down-to-earth ideas and suggestions for writers or aspiring writers to get you started and to keep you going.
The Writing Book doesn’t just talk about how to write fiction; it takes you, step-by-step, through the process of doing it.
Each chapter concentrates on one aspect of writing: getting started, bringing characters to life, writing convincing dialogue, revising and writer’s block, etc.
Exercises in each chapter are carefully structured so that each one builds on the one before. Examples from contemporary Australian writing demonstrate how different writers tackle the technical aspects of their art.
By working your way through this book, you’ll gradually craft a piece of fiction, and develop confidence in your own fictional voice.
If you’d like to write, but you’re not sure how to start, The Writing Book will show you how. If you’re already writing, The Writing Book will give you practical ideas for new energy and direction.

Review: Kate Grenville has broken down the art of creative writing into bite-size chunks and fed it to us hungry writers in a way that is both practical and invaluable. She gets her expert point across by giving readers excerpts from renowned Australian writers and explaining the logic and intent within them. And then there are the exercises: a series of tasks to help you create a great piece of writing. A must-have for any creative writer, aspiring or established.

Review: This is a great down-to-earth book for budding writers. There are lots of practical tips, examples/extracts from books by established writers, as well as exercises to get you going and to improve your writing. Topics covered include some helpful ideas to get you started, a clear analysis of each of the important basic themes of character, point of view, voice, dialogue, description, plot and ways to design, making it all convincing, revising your book and submittingj your manuscript. I bought it six months ago and still find myself dipping back into it for inspiration or clarification.
