Title: Book Review: Life After Death
Review: 07-Nov-18: It was late August when inside a bus that transported me from an aircraft to the airport, I spotted the book “Life After Death” by Dr. Deepak Chopra atop someone’s cabin luggage. My mother was rushed to the ER the night before and was not stable. Reading the title of the book, I was intrigued and saddened at the same time. My tumultuous life has taught me that in God’s dictionary the word “coincidence” doesn’t exist. Was the book suggesting that the inevitable awaited my mother? I made a conscious decision not to indulge in such thoughts, and booked a cab to go straight to the hospital. Deep within I still had hope that my mother would fight it out, one last time.Little had I known that in less than two weeks, my mother would succumb to multi-organ failure and I’ll have to fly back home (again) to complete her last rites – something I dreaded the most.Who isn’t curious to know what happens after death? So, three weeks after my mother passed away, I mustered courage to begin reading this book (I had previously ordered sitting in the hospital cafeteria, whilst my mother lay semiconscious in the CCU).Quoting the famous author Eckhart Tolle, “anyone who reads Deepak Chopra’s penetrating and insightful investigation into this great mystery with an open mind will come to realize that the opposite of death is birth, not life. Life, which in essence is consciousness, is eternal and has no opposite. There is no death, only metamorphosis of life-forms, consciousness appearing as this or that.”Without death there can be no present moment, for the last moment has to die to make the next one possible. There can be no present love, for the last emotion has to die to make a new one possible. There can be no present life, for the old cells in my body have to die to make new tissue possible. This is the miracle of creation, which in every second is one thing: life and death joined in an eternal dance. It would be a catastrophe to exclude death from the dance. That would guarantee a universe with no chance for renewal. Fortunately, creation wasn’t set up that way. We live in an endlessly re-created universe. In the end, a book on the afterlife cannot fully reconcile us with the inevitability of death. It can only lead the way to finding personal comfort on your own.

Title: Nice book, but with lot of authors assumptions.
Review: Nice book, but with lot of authors assumptions. While the insights from the interviews and the relevant touch points from the Vedanta are very interesting, the overall structure of the book is very weak. I have often found that in subjects of this kind, the author is forced to make a lot of assumptions. Here Deepak is no different and hence the book has left a lot to desire.

Review: Well Mr. Chopra may be famous but this book is just annoying. He has no original insights of his own and just quotes from a jumble of sources. For this book i would give him the epithet “i don’t know anything but i write about everything”. Any of the following titles will give you infinitely more info about the subject: In particular the book by Dr Long is a great primerRaymond Moody MD – Life After Life, Michael B. Sabom MD – Light & Death, P.M.H. Atwater LHD, Beyond the Light,Melvin Morse MD – Closer to the Light – Learning from the NDE of children, Transformed by the LightKenneth Ring PHD – Life at Death, Jeffrey Long MD – Evidence of the Afterlife, Nanci L. Review: I really enjoyed reading this book on my kindle and feel i must read more by Deepak Chopra. He has answered a lot of questions for me and given me a much deeper insight into life after death and what may await us. I feel completely in sync with the idea that we are all one entity and so when we die we go back to being one entity. The book was at times quite hard for me to follow, I did have to re-read certain parts. Very deep and meaningful! If that’s what you’re after, then this is the book for you.
