India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Yet health is not a part of our ambitious development story. In fact, India’s disproportionately stingy healthcare budget makes some of the poorer nations look better in comparison. Statistics, however, speak louder than critics: we have one of the highest numbers of women dying in childbirth and under-five mortality rates. Every year nearly sixty million people get pushed below the poverty line due to the health expenditures that they incur. But there are a few bright spots too: India has eradicated polio and reversed the incidence of HIV/AIDS by an impressive margin.Drawing on her experience as the former union health secretary, K. Sujatha Rao gives us an unsparingly candid insider’s view of India’s health system. This richly detailed book favours increasing the health budget, greater use of technology and providing leadership and good governance. Rao argues that unless good health is prioritized as a national goal, India’s growth story will remain largely self-congratulatory.

Title: Excellent book written by K
Review: Excellent book written by K. Sujatha Rao. It is often assumed that in government health system people who are in top position not aware of harsh reality of indian health care system but it was good experience that she is aware of reality and wrote it bravely. Being a non medical person she has deep insight in health system. I think health department is the second largest department after education and it is interesting for who is in health department how the health policies and programs generated, implemented and how they reach to the ground level.

Title: An unbiased view of the Indian Healthcare System
Review: As for the title, Do We Care? leaves the reader with many burning questions that need answers. Ms. Sujatha Rao, the author’s tactful choreography of empirical data to highlight the systemic faultlines not only make this book academic but also practical with effectively highlighting the root causes. Overall, an insightful and comprehensive narrative of the system for its strengths and faultlines.

Title: More like a lament!
Review: It seems every thing that is wrong with the health system is amazingly contributed by either politicians, doctors or other factors.Babus running the mammoth bloated health ministry seems to have nothing to do with it.I picked the book hoping to get some useful insights but alas…

Title:
Review: It is a comprehensive historical and social account of the Indian healthcare system. What’s crucial is its analysis of how lack of political leadership and direction has destroyed the system. Well researched.
